BitMEX, a cryptocurrency exchange, has partnered with Astrobotic Technology and Bitcoin Magazine to send the first physical bitcoin to the moon in 2024. The coin will hold one bitcoin and will be engraved with a public address (1MoonBTCixFH3XTrWRCbMpK23o74nQrA1Q) and a private key, allowing future generations to interact with the token from Earth or in space.
Scheduled for January 8 Launch
The coin will be launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on January 8 at 02:18 am ET, aboard Astrobotic’s Peregrine-1 lunar lander. The tentative arrival date on the moon is February 23, 2024. The mission will mark the first Western soft lunar landing since NASA’s Apollo 17 mission in 1972, and the first-ever financial asset sent to space.
BitMEX said that the initiative is aimed at exploring the possibilities of bitcoin beyond planet Earth, and creating a monetary system for a space economy. The exchange also said that it supports the launch of the US-listed spot bitcoin ETFs, which it believes will bring more legitimacy and transparency to the crypto market, as well as attract more institutional and retail investors.
The Vulcan rocket is set to complete an Earth orbit before propelling Peregrine-1 on a lunar trajectory. Throughout the 7-week lunar orbit phase, NASA TV will broadcast live, accessible after registration at https://shorturl.at/twyCI.
Preserved One of Humanity’s Most Pivotal Innovations
BitMEX CEO Stephan Lutz emphasized the mission’s importance in space exploration, marking the initial stride toward establishing a monetary system for a space economy. Lutz stated,
“Preserved for posterity, the Bitcoin on the Moon serves as a time capsule, encapsulating one of humanity’s most pivotal innovations and technological advancements. This momentous leap is only the inception of a new era. I eagerly anticipate the unfolding chapters in decentralized finance, where financial systems transcend terrestrial limits, empowering individuals across the cosmos.”
BitMEX co-founder Samuel Reed underscored the commitment of partners dedicated to pushing the boundaries of exploration. Reed expressed hope that their endeavors would ignite the spirit of a new generation of innovators, fostering a future where cryptocurrency and space exploration synergize, charting a course to unexplored territories and propelling the evolution of Bitcoin beyond Earth.
